A Fabric Guide for Kolkata's Weather

You can stitch a garment perfectly and still be uncomfortable in it — if the fabric is wrong for the weather. Kolkata runs hot and humid for much of the year, has a short but real winter, and packs its festive season into some of the muggiest months. Here is how to choose fabric that works with the city, not against it.

For the long, humid summer

From roughly March to October, breathability is everything. You want natural fibres that let air move and absorb moisture rather than trapping it against your skin.

• Cotton — the classic for a reason. Breathable, absorbent, endlessly wearable. Handloom cottons drape softly and only get better with wear.
• Linen — exceptionally cool and beautifully textured. It creases, but that relaxed crumple is part of its charm.
• Mul and mulmul — feather-light cottons that feel like almost nothing in peak heat, lovely for everyday kurtis and saree blouses.
• Chanderi — when you need to look dressed-up but stay cool; it has a slight sheen and a light hand.

What to avoid in peak humidity: heavy synthetics and thick georgettes that hold heat and cling.

For the festive season

Kolkata's biggest celebrations land while it is still warm and sticky. The trick is fabrics that look rich but do not smother you.

• Silk-cotton blends — the sheen and body of silk with more breathability.
• Tussar silk — textured, elegant and less stifling than heavier pure silks.
• Organza — sheer and structured, it looks festive while letting air through.

If you love a pure silk for the occasion, keep the blouse lining light and breathable — it makes hours of wear far more comfortable.

For the short winter

Kolkata's winter is brief but genuine. December and January are the months to enjoy fabrics that would be unbearable in summer.

• Pure silks — Kanjeevaram, Banarasi and other heavy silks finally get their season.
• Velvet — rich and warm, perfect for winter weddings and evening events.
• Heavier crepes and satins — they drape luxuriously and hold their shape in cooler air.

Matching fabric to the garment

Beyond weather, each fabric behaves differently once cut:

• Structured pieces (fitted blouses, gowns) want fabrics with body — crepe, silk, structured cotton.
• Flowing pieces (anarkalis, dupattas, flared skirts) want fabrics that move — georgette, chiffon, soft silk.
• Everyday wear rewards durable, low-maintenance fabrics — cotton and cotton blends you can wear and wash without fuss.
