Understanding Fabrics for Indian Wear

Before a single stitch, one decision shapes everything: the fabric. It determines how a garment drapes, how it holds embellishment, how warm it is, and how it photographs. Here is a plain-English guide to the fabrics you will meet most.

Silk

The classic for occasion wear. Silk has body, sheen and a rich drape that carries heavy embellishment beautifully. It ranges from crisp raw silk to fluid soft silks. Warm to wear and best for weddings, festivals and grand occasions.

Cotton

Breathable, comfortable and forgiving — ideal for everyday wear and for Kolkata's heat. Cotton holds structured shapes well and takes prints readily. Less suited to heavy embellishment, but unbeatable for daily elegance.

Georgette

A lightweight, slightly crinkled fabric with a lovely flowing drape. Georgette moves beautifully and flatters most bodies, which is why it is a favourite for gowns, flowing lehengas and drape-heavy silhouettes. It is forgiving and travels well.

Chiffon

Even lighter and sheerer than georgette, with an airy, elegant fall. Gorgeous for layered and draped looks, though its delicacy means it needs careful handling and usually a lining.

Velvet

Plush, rich and dramatic — velvet reads as luxury and holds deep jewel colours superbly. Best for winter weddings and statement pieces. It is heavy and warm, so consider the season.

Net and organza

Structured sheers used for volume, layering and modern silhouettes. Net carries embellishment while staying light; organza holds crisp, sculptural shapes. Both are staples of contemporary lehengas and gowns.

Matching fabric to purpose

• Grand, embellished occasion wear: silk or velvet.
• Flowing, movement-led silhouettes: georgette or chiffon.
• Everyday comfort in the heat: cotton.
• Volume and modern structure: net or organza.

A good tailor will tell you honestly whether the fabric you love will actually achieve the look you want — before cutting, not after. If in doubt, ask; the right fabric is half of a beautiful garment.
